CapMed launched the first commercial personal health record in the mid-1990’s, and continues to play a vital role in advancing PHR technology and the public policy surrounding the concept. CapMed launched the patent-pending Personal HealthKey in 2003 for secure portability of health information on a key chain by using USB flash disk technology. That same year, CapMed was acquired by Bio-Imaging Technologies, Inc. By 2006, over 600,000 PHRs had been distributed. CapMed launched its Online PHR in 2007, completing the PHR suite of tools as a fully hybrid solution, with three interchangeable formats.
