CapMed Introduces Personal HealthKey™ Secure, Private, Portable Medical Records Enabled By Flash-Based Technology From M-Systems’ DiskOnKey

Wilmington, DE, June 10, 2003–CapMed, A Division of Bio-Imaging Technologies, Inc., producer of the award-winning CapMed Personal Health Record™ (PHR), has launched the first portable medical record to use flash-based data storage technology.

The CapMed Personal HealthKey™ was developed in conjunction with M-Systems’ (NASDAQ: FLSH) Smart DiskOnKey platform, offering renowned data assurance and ease-of-use. The Personal HealthKey works in conjunction with the CapMed PHR, enabling users to securely and privately store, manage, and communicate health information.

The HealthKey is small enough to fit on a key chain and can be easily accessed by a majority of computers containing a USB port (99.9% of computers made in past four years have at least one USB port). It is being marketed in two versions: a 64MB key, which contains the entire PHR program enabling the user to carry their entire medical record (including medical images), and a 8MB key that enables the user to store and transport certain selected reports generated from PHR.

Emergency information as well as other information selected by the user is automatically available via auto-launch or by selecting the HealthKey icon on the desktop computer when the HealthKey is inserted into a computer. The remainder of the data is encrypted and password protected, viewable only at the user’s discretion. The HealthKey can also be customized to interface and capture data from a variety of sources, including physicians, hospitals, medical imaging centers, insurers, pharmacies or labs.

CapMed CEO Wendy Angst said the Personal HealthKey takes patient-controlled health records to a whole new level. “The Personal HealthKey makes our PHR software portable so no matter where you are, your health records can securely be with you. It’s an ideal product relative to the converging trends in health care of HIPAA, medical errors, and disease management.”

Lancaster General, ranked as one of the country’s top 100 hospitals for the past five years, recently announced a partnership with CapMed, involving the distribution of 110,000 copies of the PHR to its employees, patients and community. The hospital plans to add the HealthKey to this offering. “The HealthKey is an important additional benefit to the CapMed package,” says Len Martin, senior VP and CIO of Lancaster General. “We will be developing an active program to offer this to our community.”

In addition, CapMed is working with Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington Delaware, and the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland to research and analyze the acceptance and impact of the Personal HealthKey on the health outcomes of patients with diabetes.

The flash-based data storage solution that powers the HealthKey and implements PHR is provided by M-Systems’ Smart DiskOnKey platform. M-Systems innovated flash-based technology by offering multiple products impacting government, consumer and business markets, including the DiskOnKey family of products. The unique USB drive solution replaces floppy disks with robust portable storage, offering performance, reliability, security and the flexibility to run programs from the device. M-Systems has also engineered the device for partners and OEMs to implement proprietary applications through M-Systems’ software developers kit (SDK). The relationship with CapMed represents M-Systems’ support and commitment to the worldwide health care market.

“We are very excited to work with CapMed by providing meaningful technology that will positively impact lives,” said Blaine Phelps, worldwide marketing manager, M-Systems’ DiskOnKey Business Unit. “CapMed’s Personal HealthKey is a powerful and compelling example of how application developers can impact their markets by implementing the Smart DiskOnKey platform.”
